I think back to the day at the zoo with my son. I’m watching him intently as he feeds the small goat some brown pellets of food. The goat eats with vigor. They have become friends and have formed a beautiful bond. Then a sign catches my eye in the distance: Alligator feeding at 3:00 p.m.

Great! That will be worth seeing, I think. I glance back to my son who has his hand outstretched toward his friend. He is attempting to feed her some different brown pellets. But something has changed. The goat backs up suddenly and runs into the fence behind her with a thud! My son tries again. The goat runs to the corner of the pen, bleating all the way. He runs after her, clearly upset, frantically attempting to entice his small friend to return. The goat simply won’t take the food. Something has obviously changed, but what? A wall has been put up suddenly, breaking the bond that they shared. My mommy-heart weeps for my son. The thrill of a newfound friendship and the heartache of abandonment—he’s experiencing the sting of rejection at such an early age. Not fun . . .
